Another analysis blames weak US approach to Iran on poor intellgence.

Two new reports criticize the US’s handling of Iran, just as the West gauges Iran’s response to a proposal meant to rein in Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. One report says the US war on terror has strengthened Tehran, the other slams America’s poor intelligence on Iran. (more…)

I’ll be darned if Sean Penn didn’t say something the other night on CNN’s Larry King Live that made a great deal of sense. As a rule Mr. Penn and I don’t see eye to eye on many things, but I couldn’t help but be pleasantly surprised to see Penn, the son of a Jewish father and Irish Catholic mother catch Larry King momentarily off guard when he quoted the old Kingfish Huey Long. Penn said, “Well, in 1932 Huey Long said something very interesting. It was, ‘Fascism will come to America, but likely under another name, perhaps anti-fascism.’” The look on King’s face was priceless, for a moment he was speechless, he finally managed a few words just before going to a commercial break, “We’ll dwell on that for a minute,” he said with a perplexed look on his face. An entire generation of corrupt business people, great. Lie, cheat, steal — it gets the job done. (more…)

Also tonight a Newsnight exclusive — we have obtained the first pictures of Kurdish soldiers being trained by Israelis in Northern Iraq. CAPITOL HILL The House Intelligence Committee today takes up a warrantless wiretapping bill that could ease a rift between the White House and Republican leaders on one side and some Republican lawmakers.

Wilson’s “rewrite” boils down to: “Ok, spy on the American people without a warrant, but throw Congress a bone once in a while. Just because we’re stripping ourselves of the role of oversight here doesn’t mean we want to be completely out the loop.” Way to stand up to your Constitutional obligations, guys. (more…)
