WASHINGTON - The attorney for former Rep. Mark Foley says Foley was molested by a member of the clergy as a teenager.

Foley has resigned over allegations that instant messaged young male page’s at the capitol soliciting a sexual relationship.

Meantime, a top House Republican says he sees no reason why House Speaker Dennis Hastert should quit over the case of former Congressman Mark Foley.

Majority Leader John Boehner says no one in the House leadership, including Hastert, knew of what he calls the “warped and sexually explicit instant messages” Foley allegedly sent young male pages.

Meanwhile, President Bush says he’s “shocked and dismayed” by the news of Foley’s communications with pages. Bush says he supports the call from Hastert for a full investigation.

Speaking in California during a campaign trip for Republican lawmakers, Bush said, “This investigation should be thorough, and any violation of the law should be prosecuted.”

There have been calls for Hastert to resign - including one call from the Washington Times newspaper. But Bush says he’s confident that Hastert will be able to resolve the matter.
