Al Gore, Rupert Murdoch Partner in TV Deal
October 9th, 2006
Al Gore is bringing his Current TV channel to the United Kingdom in a deal with British Sky Broadcasting, run by Rupert Murdoch’s son James.
Launched in August of last year, Current TV airs clips generated by viewers and producers that receive favorable notice when posted on the channel’s Web site.
James Murdoch shares Gore’s concerns for the environment, and invited the former vice president to a gathering of News Corp. executives in Pebble Beach, Calif., this summer.
At the gathering, News Corp. chief executive Rupert Murdoch urged officials to follow his son’s lead and tackle climate change issues, the Financial Times of London reported. [Editor’s Note: Al Gore is Spinning Global Warming - Read More Here].
In the UK, Gore’s channel will be carried on British Sky Broadcasting’s satellite platform.
The deal brings Current TV to around 8 million households in the UK and Ireland, adding to the nearly 30 million homes it reaches in the U.S. through cable and satellite.
As NewsMax reported in September, Current TV announced it was going into partnership with Yahoo, Inc., to create four new broadband channels offering user-created videos on the Internet.
