Democrats take over House, GOP likely holds Senate
November 7th, 2006
Fox News, NBC News and CNN (live on air) all project that Democrats will take control of the House, making Democratic Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) the first woman ever to be Speaker of the House.”Democrats shifted the balance of power on Capitol Hill Tuesday night, capturing control of the U.S. House of Representatives and gaining ground in the Senate,” declared the conservative Fox News channel — the first network to call the presidency for Bush in 2000. Fox was behind CNN and NBC in calling the House for Democrats.
Three Senate seats remain in the balance: Virginia, Missouri and Montana, with a recent Republican win in Arizona by incumbent Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) and in Tennessee by Bob Corker (R-TN). Republicans lead in all races except Virginia, where the race is within one percentage point.
Latest: AP calls 13 out of 21 gubernatorial races, 13 for Democrats.
